In 1920, after ten years of sheep farming in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), Tom Taylor, Jack’s late Father, returned home to Reading. He observed that an old friend had been successful in the field of bookmaking while he had been away. So, it was in 1920 that he decided to take up bookmaking himself.
Of course, in those days it was a very different business than what we know as bookmaking today. It was operated by “runners” who collected bets on commission. Tom Taylor had “runners” throughout Reading.
In 1927 Jack, Tom Taylor’s only son was born. He was weaned on bookmaking and got a taste for it at an early age. Jack married Barbara, an excellent bet settler in 1950. Jack and Barbara helped run the family business with Mother Nora’s help. Sadly Tom passed away in 1957 and was not able to witness the introduction of betting shops.
